Mason sophomore Kate Ziegler finished second in the 400-meter freestyle Olympic swimming trials on June 30 with a time of 4:03.92, almost certainly earning her a spot on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team.
However, Ziegler’s best event of the trials is likely to be the 800-meter freestyle, to be held on Saturday, July 5. Ziegler holds the world record in the 1,500-meter, which is not an Olympic event for women.
The trials are being conducted in Omaha, Neb.
Ziegler, who is from Great Falls, Va., doesn’t swim for Mason because of her status as a professional, but she has practiced with the team and frequently swims at Mason’s Aquatic and Fitness Center pool.
Ziegler’s main competition in the Olympic trials is Katie Hoff from Towson, Md. The two have traded the top spot in a number of events over the past year. Winners of the trials automatically earn a spot on the Olympic team, and runners-up are usually named to the team as well.
The summer Olympics will be held Aug. 8-24 in Beijing.
