Jessica Montfort has worked at the Arlington Campus Library since 2006, serving as the document delivery coordinator. And the technology and telecommunications director. And the equipment liaison.

The responsibility of holding three job titles might overwhelm a lesser campus employee. But for this Mason alumna, it’s just another day at work.

“It’s nice because I get a bit of variety, and none of [the job duties] are overbearing,” says Montfort, who sees her multipart title as a plus.

“I get to learn a lot of new things. I wasn’t exactly a tech-savvy person when I came here, and the coordinator position was not very defined. I pushed myself to learn and pick up new things here and there, and it’s really been a fun experience.”

Montfort completed her MA in English Literature at Mason in 2007. She has worked in the library since July 2006, when she moved to Northern Virginia from Roanoke.

“The staff out here is very friendly, and we get along very well,” says Montfort of her co-workers. “Coming to work every day is a pleasure.”

The feeling appears to be mutual among her fellow employees.

“Jessica continuously takes initiative in new areas … and is always willing to share her knowledge and expertise with others,” says LeRoy LaFleur, head of the Arlington Campus Library. “[She] is equally eager to lend a hand, tackle a problem or coordinate a staff trip to visit the University Archives.”

Cynthia Bentley, circulation and reserves manager at the Johnson Center Library in Fairfax, says Montfort is “reliable, conscientious, hard working and very resourceful.”

And Kristen Myers, interlibrary loan lending coordinator of the Fenwick Library in Fairfax, says Montfort’s “amiable and sincere rapport in the work environment supports President Merten’s mission statement that Mason ‘is in the people business.'”

When Montfort is not working at the library, you might find her traveling locally.

“My husband, Andrew, and I both live and work in this area, and we love going around to all of the little towns in the area. Sometimes we’ll just get in the truck and say, ‘I wonder what’s going on in Winchester?’ or wherever. We find all kinds of things we never knew were there, like interesting local restaurants, for example.”

Montfort recounts one such trip when she and her husband set off for Richmond simply because he had never been there before. They left on a Friday after work and spent the night in the state capital. She insists, however, that she is not as spur-of-the-moment as these stories suggest.

“Sometimes we’ll go places specifically, and we actually have a plan. I’m probably no more spontaneous than the next person.”

Montfort will be recognized as Employee of the Month at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, in Room 245 of the Arlington Campus Original Building.
