Mason’s Student Nurses Association has established a memorial fund in honor of the late son of Carol Urban, assistant dean of the School of Nursing, to supplement the medical expenses of full-time nursing students who are battling life-threatening diseases.
The tribute to Keith Edward Urban, who died in January 2008 at the age of 14 after a three-year battle with cancer, was announced by outgoing association president Stella Lee during the organization’s annual banquet on Friday, May 9.
The Keith E. Urban Memorial Fund was founded through initial gifts from the Mason community. Organizers hope the grants awarded will lighten the financial burdens associated with prolonged medical treatment.
“The bravery displayed by faculty and students affected by illness this past year has been very moving,” says Lee. “As nursing students, we felt strongly that we should care for one another during difficult times, and this fund will allow us to do that.”
In a speech given at the annual banquet, Carol Urban thanked the association members for honoring her son.
“This graduating class has had their own sorrows with family deaths and significant illnesses. During the final months of his battle against cancer, Keith never gave up and neither have our students,” said Urban. “They have helped one another deal with their own challenges and tragedies, and this fund reflects a long-term manifestation of those efforts.”
Students, faculty and staff wishing to contribute to the fund should mail a check (made payable to the GMU Foundation with a notation of Keith Urban Memorial Fund) to the George Mason University Foundation, 4400 University Drive, MS 1A3, Fairfax, VA 22030.
