At the close of another semester, students aren’t just busy writing papers and taking finals. Those who live on campus are packing up and moving out. To alleviate some of the hassle, organizers of the second annual Patriot Pack Out suggest a solution: “Don’t Dump It, Donate It.”
The Patriot Pack Out is a recycling and community outreach initiative at Mason that asks everyone in the Mason community — particularly students moving out of the residence halls — to donate clothing, electronics, working appliances and non-perishable food. The event runs from May 9 to 16.
“This is an easy way for everyone to donate to our local community, and it also makes the moving-out process a lot easier on the students,” says Traci Claar, director of community relations. “Last year’s event was a huge success — we collected literally thousands of pounds of donations. We plan to make this an annual Mason tradition.”
The event will feature a kick-off celebration breakfast on Friday, May 9, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Chesapeake River Way in the northeast sector near Shenandoah and Blue Ridge residence halls. Student groups will be competing against each another to see which group can bring the most donations. Coffee, juice, donuts, muffins and “Mason bagels” (tinted green) will be handed out.
The items will be donated to two local nonprofit organizations: Food for Others and the Clock Tower Thrift Shop of Northern Virginia Family Service.
Throughout the following week, students are asked to drop off their donated items at any one of the following collection locations around campus:
York River Corner: in the main lobbies of Liberty Square and Potomac Heights
Presidents Park: in Eisenhower Hall, Room 101
Dominion Hall, University Commons and Commonwealth Hall: in the main lobby of Hanover Hall and Chesapeake Main Desk
Townhouses, Student Apartments and Patriots Village: in student apartment number 5, PV Laundry Room and select townhouses
And this year, Patriot Pack Out is not just for students. On Tuesday, May 13, faculty, staff and members of the community are encouraged to drop off donations as well. From 7:30 to 9:30 a.m., vehicles can pull up to the storage trailer located on Presidents Park Drive. Volunteers will be waiting to unload vehicles. Receipts for tax deduction purposes will be given upon request.
Organizers are looking for volunteers to join the recycling staff in picking up donated items at the various residence hall locations and transporting them to a storage trailer. Mason employees may use their Volunteer Service leave for this purpose.
Each day there will be two shifts, each lasting no longer than two hours. Volunteers may register on the Patriot Pack Out web site.
