In a performance including vocal and instrumental winners of the 2008 Concerto Competition, as well as selections from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance” featuring Mason Provost Peter Stearns, the university’s Department of Music’s annual scholarship concert will be held on Sunday, May 4, at 7 p.m. at the Center for the Arts Concert Hall.

The concert will showcase the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, University Singers, George Mason University Chorale, Select Women’s Chorale, and master’s in conducting candidates under Maestro Anthony Maiello, Lisa Billingham and Stan Engebretson.

George Mason University Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra conductor Anthony Maiello, with master’s in conducting candidates Daniel William Boothe, Carrie Ann Delaney and Kris Chapman, lead the Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra through several eclectic works for instrument and voice featuring winners of Mason’s 2008 Concerto Competition: Robert Vitale, clarinet; Mi-Kyung Choi, soprano; Ji Yoon Park, piano; and Adrianna Sgarlata, soprano.

The first section of the program will include Mozart’s Concert for Clarinet, K. 622, Mvt. 1; “Tornami a vagheggiar” from Handel’s opera seria Alcina; Schumann’s Piano Concerto, Op. 54, Mvt. 1; and “Glitter and Be Gay” from Bernstein’s Candide, performed by master’s degree student and Miss Virginia 2006 Adrianna Sgarlata, conducted by Stan Engebretson.

After the intermission, Peters Stearns, provost and professor of history, will perform the satirical “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General,” perhaps the most famous song in the comedic Gilbert and Sullivan opera.

The George Mason University Combined Choirs, conducted by Lisa Billingham, will follow with “When the Foeman Bares His Steel,” also from “The Pirates of Penzance,” and “Dance a Cachuca” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Gondoliers.”
