David Wiggins, director of the School of Recreation, Health and Tourism (RHT), has been selected by the Staff Senate as the 2008 Outstanding Supervisor. David will be honored at the May 6 Outstanding Achievement Awards ceremony at 9 a.m. in the Johnson Center Dewberry Hall.
Wiggins is thrilled to have won the award.
“It is humbling to know that folks are appreciative of your efforts and would take the time to write such positive letters on your behalf. It is also humbling to be honored when you realize how many quality faculty and staff members from various units across campus were nominated for the award,” says Wiggins.
Wiggins’ employee’s nomination letters demonstrate his strong leadership abilities and caring personality that resulted in the award. Some excerpts follow.
“Dr. Wiggins is always open to suggestions for changing procedures that would make the staff more effective in dealing with students in our school and with personnel in other departments of the university. He will never turn down any sound suggestion and is very patient when the process hits a few bumps. The tone he sets encourages the classified staff and faculty to work as a team toward the common goal of giving great service to our students.”
“Dr. Wiggins is a very kind, giving, and gentle individual who genuinely cares about the professional and personal lives of his staff and colleagues. On a daily basis, he makes time to talk to students, faculty and staff and maintains an ‘open door’ policy at all times. When a staff or faculty member is experiencing personal or professional difficulties, he takes interest and is concerned about their well-being. He is less concerned about what he has to accomplish and takes time for others.”
“Dave exemplifies the characteristics of successful and respected leaders, consistently illustrating his ability to: openly listen; show commitment to the growth of others; build consensus; conceptualize the future of the department and effectively bring that vision to life; and celebrate the achievements of his employees. Further, while Dave has an excellent sense of humor that makes working in RHT a joy, he also takes his responsibilities seriously and can advocate for his employees and the school as a whole with intelligence and strength.”
“In sum, Dr. Wiggins is a highly respectable individual who takes pride in the faculty, adjunct faculty, staff, and students in the School of Recreation, Health, and Tourism.”
