Two open Town Hall meetings will be held next week on the Fairfax Campus to discuss the Faculty/Staff Housing project currently under way. Tom Calhoun, vice president for facilities, will share information on policies, locations and schedules.
The first meeting will be held Monday, April 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center Cinema. The second will be held on Tuesday, April 29, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Edwin Meese III Conference Room in Mason Hall.
“This is part of our ongoing effort to share information about the current construction projects and their status,” Calhoun says. “Concerning the Faculty/Staff Housing in particular, it’s especially important that we keep Mason employees well informed, as this is a project we’re building for them.”
The development consists of 155 housing units on the northeast corner of the Fairfax Campus. The townhome community will be a mixture of flat- and stacked-home floor plans. Rental units will be offered, with leasing options ranging up to 36 months.
The overall goal of the housing project is to enhance Mason’s recruitment efforts and retention numbers by providing below-market rental housing. By offering each unit between 5 and 10 percent below market value, Mason hopes to ease the sticker shock for prospective faculty and staff coming from other regions of the country.
“Offering these homes at below-market values will play a significant role in recruiting top-notch faculty to the university,” Calhoun says. “These will serve as comfortable transition homes while they familiarize themselves with the region and determine where they wish to live permanently.”
Now that the design phase is complete, construction is scheduled to begin in July. The units will be available by the beginning of the fall 2009 semester.
