Position at Mason: Senior database analyst in the Information Technology Unit, Technology Systems Division Database Application Services

Years at Mason: 12

First job at Mason: Taylor worked in the same department, but began as an applications analyst

What her job entails: Taylor has her hands full with her numerous job responsibilities, many of which only a techie would understand. Here’s what she calls her “short list”: “I support the Oracle database servers and application servers for Sungard HE Banner applications as the lead database analyst; I am the lead for Oracle database management coordination and backup of Banner application and Oracle database maintenance; support for Banner databases and Oracle upgrades/patches; secondary support for Oracle datamart and other decentralized Oracle databases, including Travel, AXIS Telephone System, and COEUS; and back-end support for AppWorx job scheduler and Serena team track system.”

What she enjoys most about her job: Taylor enjoys the academic environment more than working in either the federal or subcontractor environments. “You have more opportunities to interact with your customers and also have them appreciate the work that you do. The university has a wonderful program in recognizing employees who do well. Work hours are flexible; and last but not least, [I have] a great supervisor!”

Best memory at Mason: Taylor’s best memory is also her worst. “When I first came here, there were three other database analysts in my group; within the year, two left and the other retired, leaving me to support all of the university’s computing systems by myself during the winter break through the spring add/drop season. It was tough, but I learned that I can handle a lot of pressure. I also learned my limits, which have not been tested to that extreme since.”

What she does for fun: Taylor reads a lot, is an avid tennis fan and loves movies. “I rival most collections in four different formats.”

What others say about her:

“Belinda is outstanding. Her competency is extraordinary. She is a resource that is valuable not only for her own accomplishments, which are substantial, but because she provides assistance and guidance to others. I am always pleased when I have a question or a need for support; Belinda assists me promptly. Because of her deep knowledge, she resolves most of the problems and questions quickly. Thus for me, she deals with what I consider the difficult issues and she is always helpful. Beyond that, she is always courteous and does not consider any question too unimportant for her attention.”

—Mary Linhart, applications analyst, Workflow and Data Warehouse Services, Technology Systems Division

“I believe Belinda epitomizes Mason’s customer service philosophy. If one looks up customer service in the dictionary, you will see her picture. If you are asked to define customer service, just show them her picture. She goes out of her way to assist anyone, and I mean anyone, whether it is database related or not. She is truly dedicated to a difficult role she is in. But best of all, she brings out the best in all of us – which is the best gift for all of us.”

—K. Yim, systems application architect, Database Application Services

“I have worked with Belinda Taylor for a number of years and she has always been a trusted and valuable resource for just about any work-related question that I could ask of her. More often than not, TSD staff members end up at her desk asking how and why. I hear the phrase ‘Go ask Belinda’ at least weekly in the hallways of Thompson Hall. I am certain for those not in Thompson Hall that her phone number is on speed dial. Frequently, Belinda has taken an issue for resolution or troubleshooting that is not directly related to her job responsibilities, but she always takes the time to answer and provide assistance and guidance. The fact that she is relied upon for information regardless of what she is working on further shows her willingness to share her experience and knowledge with others.”
