Mason seniors Sarah Bizer, a member of the women’s swimming and diving team, and Will Thomas, a member of the men’s basketball team, were named Student-Athletes of the Month by Intercollegiate Athletics.
Bizer set a new Mason record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.43 at the Patriot Invitational in November. The time was also a meet record, one of three she set on the weekend. Her time of 51.60 in the 100-yard freestyle as well as the 400-yard freestyle relay team she anchored (3:28.39) also represented new best times for Mason’s signature meet.
Competing in the U.S. Short Course National Championships in Atlanta, Bizer swam career-best times of 51.19 in the 100-yard freestyle and 56.72 in the 100-yard butterfly. The Annandale, Va., native has bested her previous career mark in three events just one month into her senior season.
Meanwhile, Thomas was critical to getting men’s basketball off to the best start in school history. Mason went 4-0 to open the year and finished November with a 6-1 record. The Patriots beat no. 18 Kansas State in that stretch and Mason’s only loss came to no. 20 Villanova.
Thomas averaged 16.7 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists in the month. He averaged 34 minutes of playing time, shooting 59.7 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the free throw line. He’s among the top 20 in Mason history in points, top 15 in blocks and top 10 in rebounding. Thomas was twice named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week in November, earning the honor in back-to-back weeks.
