Name: Jeanmerie Lagos

Position at Mason: Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for University Relations

Years at Mason: Six years

What she does: Lagos provides administrative support to the vice president for University Relations, coordinates and manages the budget for the Office of University Relations, and serves as Human Resources liaison. “These three components of my position require me to interact daily with many departments across campus.”

What she enjoys most about her job: Lagos enjoys working with a highly creative group of people. “University Relations is the primary communication and information center for the university. My co-workers provide professional services which promote George Mason University as a leading institution of higher education. They are actively involved in covering news stories and campus announcements, doing event planning and web design and creating brochures and publications. They are a wonderful team and I am fortunate to work with them.” Lagos also enjoys the uplifting campus atmosphere. “I have the best of both worlds. It is a pleasure to work in Mason Hall among the university leaders and it is also a lot of fun to experience a vibrant campus each day. It’s a great mix.”

Life before Mason: Before coming to Mason, Lagos worked at the George Washington University (GWU) for 15 years. “I held administrative support positions in the Graduate Business Admissions Office, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Law Library and GW Television.” In addition to working there, she was born at the GWU hospital and also graduated with a BA in International Affairs.

Best Memory at Mason: “Being a recipient of the Employee of the Month Award will be a fond memory for me.”

What she does for fun: Lagos has a penchant for the outdoors. “On weekends, my husband and I run and bike.”

Something people may not know about her: Raised in Northern Virginia, Jeanmerie’s earliest memory of George Mason University is from when she was a 5-year-old in the ’60s. “I remember sitting in the back seat of my parents’ car and waving to an elderly man in a trailer as we passed by Braddock Road and Rt.123 – where the George Mason University sign sits today! It was a regular routine!”

What others say about her:

“Jeanmerie provided invaluable assistance to Christine LaPaille during her transition to the new role of vice president of University Relations. She extended a warm welcome to the incoming vice president and helped her to learn about the university. Above and beyond her responsibilities as administrative assistant to a vice president, Jeammerie also took on the job of managing construction for the remodeling of suite D217 in Mason Hall. She was able to take on major responsibilities associated with the remodeling, to keep staff members reasonably calm, and to facilitate a smooth transition to the new cubicles and offices. Additionally, she has provided support for staff morale by always having a warm smile, a humorous story and energetic spirit that cheers up staff members and provides a good motivational foundation for those working with her. She is a person who brightens up a day in the office.”

—Paras Kaul, director of Web Communications

“Her contributions to our department are too numerous to name. She serves as our vital link to Human Resources, keeping us informed of changes and making sure we follow guidelines. She is always pleasant to work with and willing to assist anyone in need. Her love for the university is genuine and reflected in her daily work ethic. She is a person of great character and an overall great employee.”

—Cindy Stocks, production manager of Creative Services

“Jeanmerie was the ‘constant’ that kept University Relations running through the transition of vice presidents in our department two years ago. Without her background knowledge, attention to detail and proactive nature, many details would have slipped through the cracks. She continues to track the work of multiple units within University Relations to make sure we are running smoothly. Jeanmerie performs efficiently with a positive attitude. She is truly deserving of the Employee of the Month award.”

—Traci Claar, director of Community Relations

“She is an extremely bright and hard-working individual who possesses good communication skills and has a desire to do well at all that she is assigned. Additionally, Jeanmerie is dependable, loyal and has the ability to work well with a diverse group of people. It is her positive and conscientious attitude that has endeared her to so many of her co-workers.”
