Mason sports teams are in full swing, with men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball already in play this fall. A summary of weekend results follows.
The men’s soccer team finished in third place at 2007 Adidas D.C. College Cup after losing a close match to American University, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Mason Stadium. Freshman Fro Adu and sophomore Richard Edgar were named members of the 2007 Adidas D.C. College Cup All-Tournament Team. In addition, Adu was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week. The team will return to action on Friday, Sept. 7, with a 2 p.m. match against Bowling Green at George Mason Stadium.
The women’s soccer team earned its first win of the 2007 season on Sunday afternoon as the Patriots defeated Harvard 2-1. This brings the team record to 1-1-0. The game was scoreless at the half, but not for long, as L. J. Williams scored Mason’s first goal of the year and Kelly Keelan followed with another less than 15 minutes later. Mason will take on Stony Brook in their next game on Friday, Sept. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the George Mason Stadium.
The women’s volleyball team earned its first win of the 2007 season on Sunday afternoon as the Patriots defeated the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, 3-1 (30-20, 30-16, 27-30, 30-19), in the final match of the 2007 Brion’s Grille Patriot Invitational. Earlier in the day, Mason notched a 3-0 shutout victory over Howard. Rebecca Walter led the Patriots with a career-best 24 kills. For her efforts, she was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The Patriots’ next home date, a 7 p.m. match against Delaware on Sept. 28, will be held across campus at the Field House, as Linn Gym is set to begin renovations. Mason will remain at the Field House for the duration of the 2007 season.
