If you’re a person who prefers to get news and information quickly in an audio format, “RECHARGE,” Mason’s new five-minute weekly podcast, is the ticket.
A second generation of last year’s “The Launch Pad” podcast, the new show, produced by Web Communications in University Relations, is available for downloading today.
The first show will focus on Welcome Week events. Beginning next week, a new show will be available each Wednesday throughout the semester. The service is free.
What’s new this year? For the first time, the show is tied into the popular social networking site, Facebook, explains Irene Flores, one of the show’s producers who works in Web Communications. Because the podcast is “for students, by students, we wanted to make it more interactive this year,” she says. “It’s web 2.0. It’s a two-way deal.”
Campus organizers who have events to publicize can submit their announcements through the RECHARGE site, recharge.gmu.edu, which is coordinated with Facebook. “Everyone uses Facebook,” says co-producer Paras Kaul, Web Communications director. “And using it provides a level of security.”
Last year’s podcast was only available through the iTunes format, but RECHARGE is available now as an MP3 download as well. And this year’s podcasts will be short and sweet with only news about Mason events for the week ahead.
Student Government president Drew Shelnutt and vice president Ijeoma Nwatu are taking a lead in the RECHARGE production, but other students are encouraged to join the newscast. Information gathering, script writing, learning to be an effective “pod jockey” and doing professional audio recording and digital editing “provide a great learning experience for students,” says Kaul.
Media Technologies, another University Relations office, provides technical assistance for the show, and Michael Galvin, Dining Services’ marketing and community affairs director, lends his broadcast expertise as he did last year.
