August means back-to-school preparations for many families–shopping for school supplies and new clothes, packing book bags and making lunches. However, for some Northern Virginia families, going back to school is not always easy, considering 32,000 children in Fairfax County live below the poverty level and cannot afford the basic supplies they need to ensure scholastic success.
To help reduce the number of children who cannot afford proper school supplies, Mason has created a university-wide contest. From now until Aug. 24, Supply Our Students, a program sponsored the by College of Visual and Performing Arts, will be accepting donations of new school supplies and new and gently used backpacks.
The office or group that collects and delivers the most school supplies will receive a seasonal gift basket.
The collected items will be donated to Fairfax County Public Schools in an effort to provide needy children with proper school materials and to make back-to-school season a little easier on the wallets of Northern Virginia families.
Donations can be delivered to Lori Petterson in Robinson A201. For more information, contact firstname.lastname@example.org, or call 703-993-1410.
