Heavy traffic is nothing new to residents in the Northern Virginia area, but with the temperature and gas prices on the rise, many people are looking for alternate means of transportation.
Guoqing Diao, assistant professor of statistics, uses the shuttle to get to meetings at the Prince William Campus from his Fairfax Campus office.
One alternative at Mason is the shuttle that runs from the Fairfax Campus to the Prince William Campus, with one stop at the Manassas Mall. The trip takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. Mason hired Reston Limousine to create the shuttle.
While most riders appreciate the shuttle as a way of saving gas and money, students and faculty at Mason enjoy the shuttle for other reasons as well.
Mudit Gupta, a Mason student pursuing a master’s in electrical engineering, has ridden the shuttle for two semesters. Gupta lives next to the Fairfax Campus, but works in the photo ID office at the Prince William Campus. He takes advantage of the shuttle to make his commute to work more convenient and enjoyable.
“I really like the shuttle because I can sleep on the way to work,” says Gupta. “Of course, it is also helpful to cut back on the amount of gas I have to pump since prices are getting so high.”
The shuttle buses are modern, equipped with 34 spacious, reclining seats, overhead lighting, storage compartments and wireless Internet access. Shuttle schedules are displayed in the front windows for passengers’ convenience.
With his office at the Fairfax Campus, Guoqing Diao, assistant professor of statistics, uses the shuttle to attend dissertation committee meetings at the Prince William Campus.
“I don’t want to drive because the shuttle is so much more convenient; it is right next to my office [in Science and Tech II]. I also like being able to read or take a quick nap while I’m on the shuttle,” says Diao.
