As a part of Mason’s continuing “Going Green” campaign, Transportation Services has teamed up with Zipcar to provide students and employees a more convenient and environmentally sound way to get around.
According to Mason’s transportation coordinator Anne Whitley, “Zipcars are cars that can be rented by the hour or by the day. Once becoming a member of Zipcar, you will have access to hundreds of vehicles.”
The program involves online or telephone reservations of communal vehicles parked around the Washington, D.C., area, including Mason’s campus locations in Arlington and Fairfax, as well as the Vienna Metro station.
Vehicles included in the program include Mini Coopers and hybrid vehicles like the Toyota Prius. After joining the Zipcar program, participants can reserve a car at a specific location. Gas, reserved parking, insurance and 125 free miles are included with each reservation.
The process for a reservation is relatively simple, according to Whitley.
“Whenever you want to use a Zipcar, you will go to Zipcar’s web site or call Zipcar and make a reservation. After making your reservation, you will walk to the car, hold your newly issued Zipcard to the windshield, and the doors will unlock. The car is then yours to zip away in. When you get through with the vehicle, you will simply return the Zipcar to the same parking spot you got it from.”
This new joint venture will provide discounted rates throughout the Mason community. Mason students and employees can join Zipcar for $25 per year and rent Zipcars for as little as $7.50 per hour and $56 per day. Students, faculty and staff pay no application fee, monthly minimum or membership deposit.
